COMFORT, TEXAS

Comfort, the second largest town in Kendall County, is located at the junction of State Highway 27, U.S. Highway 87, and Interstate Highway 10, sixteen miles northwest of Boerne on the county’s western edge. The town was laid out near the site of an Indian village in 1854 by Ernst Hermann Altgelt, though its history goes back to a group of Germans from New Braunfels that settled in 1852 along the banks of the Cypress Creek above its confluence with the Guadalupe River.

Comfort was founded in 1854 by a group of German immigrants who were part of the Adelsverein, a society dedicated to settling German immigrants in Texas. The settlers, primarily from the Duchy of Nassau, arrived in the area and established a communal farming community.

The German immigrants were skilled farmers, and they transformed the landscape around Comfort into a productive agricultural area. They cultivated crops, raised livestock, and contributed to the development of the local economy.

Over the years, Comfort evolved from its agricultural roots into a more diversified community. The town has seen growth while maintaining its small-town charm. Today, it attracts visitors interested in its history, architecture, and the scenic beauty of the Texas Hill Country.

One notable historical event in Comfort was the tragic episode known as the “Treue der Union” incident during the Civil War. A group of German settlers who were Union sympathizers attempted to flee to Mexico but were intercepted by Confederate forces. Many were killed, and a monument was later erected in Comfort to honor those who lost their lives.
